Metallica has had many changes in its form, in terms of band members. David Mustaine was once a part of Metallica, but departed to form Megadeth. Ron McGovney, Hetfield's old roommate, played in the band for a short period of time. Finally, the band came to it's form with Hetfield, Ulrich, Hammet, and Burton. But one fateful night, Cliff Burton died in a car crash. Jason Newsted then joined Metallica, and this combination has so far endured.
